The stands were packed Saturday at Riverside Speedway, a PASS sanctioned track, for the 1st ever visit of the PASS Sportsman. The Sportsman are similar to the newly formed Outlaw division at Riverside. Two local drivers joined the Sportsman and faired very well. The night was capped off by a great fireworks display. First up for the night was the Daredevil Rookie division. The 47 of Randy Whittum started on the pole with the 62 of Dilyn Switser outside. Switser took the lead, and the 07 of Manville Powers III moved into 2nd, and the 29 of Brendon Hunt moved into 3rd. The caution flew on lap 2 as Whittum and the 93 of Cameron Bowen got together. Switser took the initial lead, but Powers gained the lead a lap later. Powers and Whittum get together on lap 4. Switser gains the lead on the restart. Hunt and Switser get together, but recover nicely, as the 75 of Andrew Fecteau takes the lead. Switser and Hunt get together again on lap 12, this time bringing out the caution. Fecteau takes the lead on the restart. On lap 14 Powers takes the lead. At the stripe it is Powers followed by Fecteau, and Bowen. For the Veteran Daredevils, the 44 of Kyle Pembroke started on the pole, with the 2 of Curtis Randall outside. They got together on the start, and were sent to the rear. The 3 of Kristopher Russell took the lead on the restart. Russell didn’t hold the top spot for long, as the 77 of Brandon Lambert quickly moved to the lead. On lap 5 the yellow flies again for what I believe was the 12 of Brett Gervais spinning, and after one botched restart as the 19 of Walt Bandy Jr. and Russell get together, it is decided to go with a single file restart. Pembroke is back to the 3rd position by lap 9, but looses it to the 72 of Cody Hodge on lap 11. Pembroke and Hodge get together and hit the front stretch wall quiet hard bringing out the red flag. Lambert takes the checkers, with the 5 of Jesse Switser coming in 2nd, and the 73 of Riley Hartshorn in 3rd. The Angel field is growing, with 14 cars showing up. The 13 of Mary Eastman started on the pole with the 5 of Traci Nelson outside. Eastman got the jump, but Nelson quickly took the top spot. On lap 2 the 00 of Ciara McCoy overtook 2nd, bringing with her the 27 of Dayna Randall for 3rd. On lap 24 the 41 of Vanessa Brown slid under Randall for 3rd. On lap 28, Brown and McCoy get together in turn 2. Nelson gains the advantage on the restart, but the 44 of Jennie Dion overtakes her. Dion can’t hold the lead as Nelson takes the checkers, followed by Dion and Randall. The Dwarf cars were next to take the field. The 20 of Bobby Riley started on the pole with the 17 of Haywood Herriott outside. Herriott took the lead as the 2 of Eric Hall moved into 2nd, and the 17M of Curtis Robinson takes 3rd. The yellow flies as the 19 of Alyn Briggs spins. Herriott takes the restart. The 28 of Ernie Laplant overtakes 3rd on lap 4 and overtakes 2nd on lap 7. Briggs spins on lap 12 bringing out the caution. Herriott takes the lead, but doesn’t hold it as Laplant overtakes him. On lap 14 the 22 of Dana Huoppi spins on the back stretch. Laplant takes the lead as Eric Hall in the 2 moves into 2nd, but Hall can’t hold on as Herriott retakes 2nd two laps later. Laplant is first across the line followed by Herriott and Hall.
The 38 of Robin Hood started on the pole for the Super Stocks, with the 55 of Jamie Longley outside. Hood took the lead, as the 8 of Denny Degreenia moved into 2nd and the 74 of Dan Sidney moved into 3rd. On lap 3 the 18 of Ron Watson and the 31 of Brian Middleton got together bringing out the caution. Hood takes the restart. Sidney spins in turn 3 on lap 6. Hood again takes the lead. Nathan Swallow in the 04 overtakes 2nd on lap 7. Swallow and Hood get together on lap 9. Degreenia takes the restart, with the 77 of James Lambert in 2nd and 33 of Jeff Fysh in 3rd. On lap 11 the 13 of Luke Shannon overtakes 3rd, only to relinquish it back to Fysh the following lap. Lambert takes the lead on lap 21. Hood spins on lap 25 bringing out the caution. Degreenia and Lambert are even on the restart, then Lambert takes the lead and the win, followed by Degreenia and Fysh.
The 29 of Chris Meunier started on the pole for the Street Stocks, with the 06 of Michael Moore on the outside. Meunier takes the lead as the 12 of Tyler Therrien moves to 2nd and the 76 of Tori Delabruere moves to 3rd. On lap 2 Therrien takes the lead, Delabruere moves to 2nd, and the 04 of Shawn Swallow takes 3rd. The 22 of Michael Smith ducks under Swallow for 3rd on lap 8. Delabruere overtakes Therrien for the lead on lap 12. On lap 18 Smith turns Swallow into the wall. Smith is black flagged and told to load it on the trailer. Delabruere takes the restart as the 27 of Troy Randall moves into 2nd. On lap 20 the 95 of Alex Theroux briefly has 3rd place, but Therrien regains it. Delabruere takes the win under yellow/checkers, with Randall in 2nd and Therrien 3rd.
The PASS Sportsmen were up next, and after a few early cautions was a smooth and enjoyable race. Locals Jonathan Ledger in the 68 and Jeff Marshall in the 32 were up front. Marshall took the lead, as the yellow flies for the 9 of Mike Davis and the 66 of Ernest Wallace. Marshall again takes the lead as the 38 of Dan McKeage overtakes 3rd. The caution again flies on lap 3. Once again Marshall takes the restart, as McKeage moves into 2nd, and the 48 of Jerry Harrison moves into 3rd. The 35 of Kris Watson goes off turn 3 bringing out the caution. McKeage takes the lead. Harrison gets under Marshall and takes 2nd on lap 14. The caution flies on lap 16, with a bunch involved. Harrison takes the lead, Marshall tries to get back under, but can’t make it stick. The caution again flies on lap 19. Harrison takes the lead, and after a weaving in and out of lap traffic for 51 laps takes the win. Marshall takes 2nd and the 47 of Nate Weston 3rd. Ledger finished 7th. It’s great to see a couple of locals finish in the top 10.
The Cyclone’s put on another great show. With my scanner cutting in and out, and a question on the scoring, I really don’t know where everyone was during the race, but Charlie Rockwell in the 20 was declared the winner, with the 27 of Aric Cole taking 2nd, the 04x of Shawn Swallow 3rd, the 3 of Andy Simpson 4th, and the 48 of Scott Marshall 5th.
Come join the fun on July 7th. On the card are the Late Models, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Cyclones, and the Dwarf Cars.
